Drivers Stand

Postby awd » Sun Jul 18, 2010 12:03 am

I've raced with a lot of people from Santa Rosa, CA to Jackson, MS. But I gotta say I am PROUD to race at Mike's!

Sometimes people point out the complaining and bad attitudes, but I wanna point out some teamwork, enthusiasm, and optimism!

You may have heard we have been working towards making on-road racing at Mike's better recently with some new banners and panels on the drivers stand, some fresh paint, and some new banner poles. We also managed to route a new loop that would allow us to race where ever we wish on the carpet. All of this is a part of our forward focus towards racing on the "poleless" side of the carpet. As you may have heard this would optimally include a new drivers stand. So I sketched some designs and roughly estimated what it would take to build a 3-4 foot stand 24 feet long with a 36" railing for use on the concrete near the double shop doors. The final tally was in the $450 dollar neighborhood. The idea is that racers would all pitch in to cover the expense so we can all enjoy poleless, bump-free, better, less-dirt, carpet racing with the hope of even buying a tarp to cover the carpet. I mentioned this to a couple racers earlier this week and the first two people I asked immediately pledged $50 dollars each. I though "Wow, thats a pretty good start!"

So today I was asked by some off-roaders about what was happening on the on-road side. So I gave them the short version of our plans. And before I finished explaining it all I had another $50 pledge from a racer who I haven't even ever seen on the carpet! I retold the story of the off-roader contributing to a couple more on-road guys today . . .

Long story short is we are well on our way towards a $450 goal to build our drivers stand thanks to some generous racers!

So this brings me to say how awesome I think it is that we have the BEST facility i have ever seen for racing, and racers to match! Hopefully after I get a chance to talk to a few more guys tomorrow we will have enough to start building our stand!

I would like to mention that I realize everyone may not be able to contribute and I don't want anyone to feel pressured or manipulated into helping. I am going to keep the donation amounts private as well as the donors until we have all the necessary funds. Hopefully this will make everyone a little more comfortable, cuz I know its a little awkward to say yes/no. Whether you give or not will not be made public. However once the stand is built I WILL be making sure those who helped out get the recognition they deserve

So with all that good news about our hopes for a drivers stand becoming a reality with just a few more donations, I thought i would post some examples of drivers stands I have seen and get some feedback from the AWESOME racers who will be using it. Post pics of stands you like. Post pics of stands you've seen that you didn't like. While we do have some guidelines that won't be changing to ensure safety and keeping within our budget, a lot of this is up to y'all!!

Here's some pics of the drivers stand in Jackson, MS. Their carpet is 77x36 and it develops a NICE high bite groove. This stand is 24' long and 23" high.

Here's some video of Vegas as well. At the end of the 1/12th scale race you can get a feel for the height of the stand as well as the distance it is back from the track.

I like this one. Seems we could find used somewhere relatively cheap. It would also be easily moveable.

Thank you so much for everyone involved in the new driver's stand and moving the track over. I am amazed at how nice it is! No poles, no getting bumped and cleaner carpet! Can't wait till Sunday, its going to be like racing at a different/better track!

Can I still donate to the cause? I may not be able to donate time or effort...but I can donate a few $$$....

AWD...can I paypal you some fundage?

Unfortunately my work schedule has temporarily changed for the next 2 months which means absolutely no racing (I work both race days)....but once I do go back to my old schedule I will definitely be up there with my S400 and F103 (always wanted to have some fun with the car on carpet...)....

Anyways let me know on the donation thing and AWESOME work...great bunch of people we have there at Mikes....
Finishing last is an art form.

Practiced on the stand today and I liked the lower angle and the lack of poles.

I practiced yesterday and there where 3 other 12th scales practicing too. In the begining it was really slick but traction came up really quick. By the third pack we had a nice enough groove going that I could turn my d/r up a little and get on the throttle early.

I practiced at the track today on the new drivers stand. I must say it was great. I was a little worried it was being built too low, but the viewing angle is really good. The track was a little dirty but my car ran great after I made several laps around and if I stayed in the groove. It was the best I've seen the track and driving conditions since I've been coming to Mikes and it was the most fun I've had driving since getting back into onroad.

Thanks to everyone who donated to the track. Also, thanks for Andrew and Michael's efforts and anyone else who assisted in the build. It's really nice. I would race this Sunday, but I'm out of town for the weekend.

If you weren't able to make racing today, it was awesome. We had a full class of 8 12th scales and traction was great. I enjoyed running the spec software as well. I think its a move in the right direction for us.

I wish I could be there next weekend to help deepen the groove, but I will be in California on vacation and racing at Asphalt Nationals.

Somebody post after racing next week to say how things went!

I like the driver stand at the lower level, seemed better suited for the smaller track. Just need a challenging layout. If I can, I would help. Should consider Vegas as I am sure some of you are making that trip.

I had some traction but it was dusty out there. What are the tire shores for these conditions?

Its always dustiest on Monday after we sweep/clean. I have found good grip with Yellow, Orange, and White rears. I haven't used anything but double pink fronts for a while, but I am certain lilacs would work as well if not better. I wouldn't be surprised if just about any front tire wouldn't work.

"Somebody post after racing next week to say how things went!

AWD-OUT"

There was another great day of racing 8/1! We had about 10 12th scale racers, two from Houston (Chris and ?). Sedan only had two racers, Chris Adams and Steve Bruer.

Lap times are inproving with V208/no timing. Four of the 12th scales (Steve, Larry, Houston Chris and myself) had their best lap times in the 7.6 range. Larry had the fastest lap of 7.62?.

Steve Bruer won the double crown by TQ'ing and winning both 12th scale and sedan!

Nope. But the ones that showed up had some good practice.
We were putting down some 7.7 sec laps.
One or two more guys and we would have raced.
I'm really enjoying the new driver stand and layout.

Welcome home Andrew. Good job at the Nats.
